SUMMARY:Friends of Seattle Olmsted Parks Walking Tour: Volunteer Park
DESCRIPTION:Volunteer Park is often referred to as the crown jewel of Seattle’s Olmsted park and boulevard system\, as its most complete and best-preserved Olmsted-designed landscape. Land purchased in 1876 was originally used as a cemetery\, but in their 1903 report to the Seattle Board of Park Commissioners\, the Olmsted Brothers proposed extensive improvements to the earlier park design by Parks Superintendent E.O. Schwagerl. Design drawings\, developed from 1904 to 1910\, incorporated the city water system facilities and guided the development of a pastoral landscape complemented by more formal garden beds along the ridge the park. \nCreating an elaborate park system was probably the furthest thought from their minds when the Denny party arrived at Alki Point on November 13\, 1851. All they could see through the rain were trees\, more trees\, and water. Building a home was far more important than building a place to play. And yet\, just 33 years later Seattle had its first park and\, 20 years after that\, the city had a comprehensive plan for major parks and parkways that would rival any found in the United States.

SUMMARY:Call for Submissions - Earth Day
DESCRIPTION:Celebrating the 50th Anniversary of Earth Day and Appreciation of Seattle’s Parks\n  \nDo you have a favorite photo\, memory\, or personal artwork that involves one of our Olmsted parks or boulevards\, or any of our city parks? In these days of self-containment\, do you find yourself growing introspective about Seattle’s striking surroundings or its colorful history? We’d love to see and hear from you! \nWith the global outbreak of COVID-19\, Friends of Seattle’s Olmsted Parks is revisiting some of its springtime plans\, including events to honor Earth Day 50 years after its founding. So\, to mark this Anniversary\, Friends of Seattle’s Olmsted Parks would like to collect and share images and mementos that celebrate Seattle’s great outdoors. \nLawton Park (photo credit: Gretchen van Etten- Semke)\n  \nIn this time of having to reinvent how we conduct our daily lives\, FSOP also remembers how our larger city environment has been reshaped and its landscapes re-purposed over many decades. Our older Olmsted parks both directed and responded to Seattle’s early development\, as have more recently acquired park properties. In normal times\, these outdoor spaces provide opportunities for group recreation and outdoor events\, socializing\, immersion into native woodland settings\, distant mountain views\, and scenic panoramas.  While we cannot currently partake in all these activities\, we can express gratitude and appreciation for how they are made possible. We encourage everyone to share ways that Seattle’s parks are meaningful to them\, in whatever medium or form is digitally suitable. \nFrink Park (Seattle Municipal Archives #178408)\n  \nWe also feel this will be a great way to connect and share happy memories with each other\, particularly during this time of extraordinary containment and isolation due to coronavirus. \n  \n \n  \nWe will assemble entries into a slide show\, which will be posted on our website and Facebook page on April 22. \nSo\, if you have a photo\, sketch\, poem\, musing\, written piece or memory you’d like to share\, please send it to fsopjen@gmail.com or to friends@seattleolmsted.org. And keep your eyes peeled for the final display! \nDeadline for submissions is Saturday\, April 18. Digital submissions only\, please. \nSteps to Mt. This event takes place at the Art Space Mount Baker Lofts\, in the community room (2915 Rainier Avenue South – facing the Mt Baker Link station). The Program includes a set of Town Hall-style “Lightning Talks”\, with presentations from Friends of Seattle Olmsted Parks\, International Living Future Institute\, Miller Hull\, Schemata Workshop\, Seattle Neighborhood Greenways\, Seattle Public Utilities\, and Sound Transit. These presentations will explore how the North Rainier Valley and its Mt Baker “Hub” can become a truly sustainable community. This event will also provide an opportunity for community members to learn more about the area’s registration for the Living Community Challenge. \nJennifer Ott\, FSOP’s vice president\, will talk about how the Olmsted Brothers plans for Seattle’s parks\, boulevards and playground encompassed the entire city and provided city leaders with a plan for ensuring every neighborhood had access to park space. The plan is inspired by Seattle’s varied landscape and spectacular views and ensures that even as the city grow\, everyone can enjoy the parks\, forests\, shorelands\, and vistas within the city. In Mount Baker Town Center\, there is the opportunity to reconnect the lakeshore\, with its mountain and lake views\, with the forests along Cheasty Boulevard and the amazing city views and recreational opportunities at Jefferson Park. There are not many cities that can boast such an array of natural amenities in such close proximity and we want to further Olmsted’s vision of connectivity and access for all as development continues. \nFOR MORE INFORMATION ON HUB FEST CONTACT:Maia@pennilessprojects.com or Towncenterfriends@gmail.org

SUMMARY:TreePAC Candidate Forum
DESCRIPTION:FSOP has joined with TreePAC\, a group of local non-profits who collaborate to influence the government to protect\, maintain and increase the urban forest\, to host a candidate forum at the Center for Urban Horticulture (3501 NE 41st Street) on Tuesday\, September 29th\, from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. Candidates for Seattle City Council will answer questions regarding their views on preserving and improving urban forests. \nUrban forest and green spaces\, as you know\, create healthy and livable communities and were a key element of the Olmsted Brothers’ plans for Seattle’s parks and boulevards. The goal of the forum is to provide a platform for our organizations\, members\, and allies to present and discuss key issues with potential City Council members. Additionally\, the forum will help the community understand each candidate’s vision for green and open space in Seattle. The forum will elevate these issues and help prioritize their consideration in future City Council work. \nThe forum will address issues concerning the urban forest and green space in Seattle\, and specific issues facing City Council members including: density and development\, urban forestry funding and legislation\, Parks acquisition\, and comprehensive urban forest planning. \nThe TreePac forum welcomes all comers to show a united group in common thought on the importance of our green space. All are welcome to listen\, learn\, ask\, and let our council candidates see how important green spaces are to us. \nFor answers Seattle City Council candidates provided on TreePAC’s candidate questionnaire\, visit http://treepac.org/2015-city-council-candidate-questionnaire/2015-questionnaire-responses/. \nFor more information please contact Cass Turnbull at 206-783-9093 or cassturnbull@comcast.net. \nBridge across stream in Schmitz Preserve Park\, 1910.
