SUMMARY:UW Botanic Gardens: Washington Park Arboretum Walking Tour
DESCRIPTION:The city first acquired Washington Park from the Puget Mill Company in 1900. By 1904\, the city hired the Olmsted Brothers firm to prepare drawings for a roadway alignment through the park. Plans for how a “pleasure drive” would connect Lake Washington Boulevard to the university campus through Washington Park evolved quickly over the next several months. \nThe Olmsted Brothers firm would not address Washington Park design again until the 1930’s\, when James Dawson was hired to provide a master plan for creating an arboretum within the park. Features of the Olmsted Brothers’ plans that are most evident today include Lake Washington Boulevard\, Azalea Way\, the Stone Cottage and Stone Overlook\, and the pond in the Japanese Garden. \nCost: $30 Order tickets here. Financial aid slots available on a first-come\, first-served basis.

SUMMARY:Leschi & Frink Park Tour
DESCRIPTION:Leschi and Frink Parks were privately-owned parks open to the public when John Charles Olmsted arrived in 1903 to design Seattle’s Park and Boulevard system. Olmsted referred to these steeply-sloped parks as the “Rainier Heights Landslide Section” and recommended that the entire area become part of Seattle’s park system to prevent major loss from future landslides if developed into residential neighborhoods. \nTour details: \n\nMeet at Leschi Elementary School\, 135 32nd Avenue\, Seattle 98122 promptly at 10 a.m.\nThe tour lasts approximately 2.5 hours and is approximately 2 miles in length.\nThis challenging loop walk includes a steep slope. Please wear appropriate shoes. And come prepared to walk both downhill and uphill on uneven ground and aging stone staircases. We urge you to bring hiking poles.\n\nFree registration\, please link to Eventbrite to sign up. If you have any additional questions about this tour\, please email tours@seattleolmsted.org.

SUMMARY:UW Botanic Gardens: University of Washington Campus Walking Tour
DESCRIPTION:Relocated from downtown northward to larger\, less-developed acreage in 1895\, the University of Washington consisted of just six buildings when the Olmsted Brothers firm prepared a general campus plan in 1903. John Charles Olmsted returned in 1906 to design the grounds for the 1909 Alaska-Yukon-Pacific Exposition (AYPE)\, which attracted over three million people to Seattle (population 240\,000) that year. Olmsted incorporated the campus into the overall city park system and encouraged the university’s regents to reserve part of the campus for public park uses. Today it is an important element of the city’s open space infrastructure. \nCost: $30 Order tickets here. Financial aid slots available on a first-come\, first-served basis.

SUMMARY:UW Botanic Gardens: Seward Park Walking Tour
DESCRIPTION:Originally called Bailey Peninsula\, Seward Park boasts some of Seattle’s oldest-growth native forest thanks to John Charles Olmsted\, who helped save it from development by encouraging the city to include its purchase in the park and boulevard system he designed in 1903. \nBailey Peninsula was far outside the City limits when Olmsted proposed including it as part of the Comprehensive Park & Boulevard System in 1903. As a 300-acre natural reserve it would form an ideal terminus of what is now Lake Washington Boulevard. \nIn 1911 the City purchased the peninsula. Olmsted’s 1912 preliminary plan for the park locates programmed spaces\, such as a dancing pavilion\, basketball and tennis courts\, and a small boat harbor on the northern shore of the park. The majority of the park featured the old growth forest\, which visitors could explore via several meandering trails. The design is a prime example of the Olmsted Brothers’ ecological approach to park design\, with many woodland trails\, an amphitheater and a shoreline trail. \nOlmsted’s plan was never fully implemented\, but his 1912 plan influenced later development in the park\, and the forest has largely been preserved. \nCost: $30 Purchase tickets here. Financial aid slots on a first-come\, first-served basis.

SUMMARY:Delridge "Dell" Tour
DESCRIPTION:The Olmsted Brothers’ 1903 report did not include West Seattle because it was still outside Seattle’s city limits. But when the neighborhood was annexed in 1907\, Olmsted was hired back to add to his original park and boulevard plan. \nHe recommended connecting boulevards between the City’s east side and West Seattle. In addition to the boulevards that were never built\, he recommended parks along Longfellow Creek and what became Delridge Playfield. On this walk you will learn about the boulevards that were never built\, and what evidence is still to be found of the Olmsted Brothers’ recommendations for the Delridge neighborhood. \nAbout the Delridge tour: Meet at 26th Avenue SW & SW Yancy Street in the Delridge neighborhood. \nThis walk is not a loop. Distance is approximately 2.5 miles to the end point at 26th & Graham (one-way). Tour participants may walk back to the start on SW 26th Street\, or catch the H Line bus at Graham & Delridge Way and return to within a couple of blocks of the starting point. Tour participants are responsible for their own bus fare. \nThe tour should last approximately 2 1/2 hours (one-way) – please allow for extra time if you intend to walk both directions. \nThe tour is FREE and appropriate for all ages. Walks  will happen rain or shine. \nContact tours@seattleolmsted.org for more information about specific tours.

SUMMARY:Magnolia Boulevard Madrone Walk
DESCRIPTION:Seattle’s Olmsted Parks and Boulevards was imagined as a system of beautiful landscapes and boulevards in the late 1800s. Magnolia Boulevard is home to some of the most picturesque views foregrounded by madrone with an expansive Puget Sound backdrop. In late November\, Seattle Parks and Recreation installed a series of planting beds to protect larger madrone trees and enhancing understory plant diversity. We are planning a tree walk to highlight the Boulevard’s trees and Olmsted legacy project for April 15. Join the ARME and landscape architects from Seattle Parks and Recreation and the Berger Partnership. \nOpen to the public \nAll ages OK

SUMMARY:May 18th Walking Tour -- SW Queen Anne Hill
DESCRIPTION:Join Us on May 18th for our Walking Tour in Kinnear Park and SW Queen Anne Hill \nYou may want to wear your “fitbit” for this one! We will be taking a few sets of stairs along our route through this neighborhood. \nJohn Charles Olmsted had little influence on Kinnear Park itself — it was already a developed park when he arrived in Seattle in 1903 — but the park helped define Olmsted’s vision for a park and boulevard system extending throughout Seattle\, including Queen Anne Hill. We will learn more about that vision and Olmsted’s plans for southwest Queen Anne as we wind through the neighborhood\, also taking in Marshall Park\, Betty Bowen’s house\, Willcox Wall\, a portion of Queen Anne Boulevard\, and the impressive residential estate of C.H. Black\, the grounds of which were designed by the Olmsted Brothers firm. \nPlease note the early start time. You may contact friends@seattleolmsted.org for more information about this tour. \nMay 18th\nKinnear Park and SW Queen Anne Hill\n9:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. \nMeet at the stairway entrance to Kinnear Park at 7th Ave and W Olympic Place. \nBetty Bowen Viewpoint at Marshall Park

SUMMARY:Walking Tour of New Zealand Focal Forest in Washington Park Arboretum
DESCRIPTION:Join FSOP as we tour the newly opened New Zealand Focal Forest in the Washington Park Arboretum on September 28th\, at 10 a.m. We will meet at the Japanese Garden parking lot and the tour will last about 2 hours. Andy Mitton\, FSOP board member and The Berger Partnership’s landscape architect for the project\, will lead the tour. They will talk about the forest’s design and its relationship to the other forests in the Pacific Connections Garden. We’ll also talk about the Olmsted Brothers legacy in Washington Park and the Arboretum. \nAccording to Seattle Parks and Recreation\, the New Zealand Forest is the first of five eco-geographic forests to be fully completed in the Arboretum’s Pacific Connections Garden\, which will someday cover 14 acres in Washington Park and include forests from Cascadia\, Chile\, Australia\, and China\, in addition to the New Zealand forest. Within the New Zealand Forest\, there are seven vegetation zones: two southern beech (Nothofagus) forests\, three shrublands\, and two alpine grasslands. These vegetation zones are found in mid- to high-elevation zones on the South Island of New Zealand. \nThe Washington Park Arboretum was designed in 1936 by James Frederick Dawson\, a senior partner in the Olmsted Brothers firm. Dawson had worked extensively in Seattle\, including playing a major role in implementing John Charles Olmsted’s landscape plan for the Alaska-Yukon Pacific Exposition held on the University of Washington campus in 1909. The Seattle Garden Club brought Dawson to Seattle in 1935 to prepare plans that Works Progress Administration workers could use to develop the Arboretum. \nFor more information about the New Zealand Forest see: \n*The Seattle Parks and Recreation website\,\n*“Planting the New Zealand Forest\,” in the summer 2013 issue of the Washington Park Arboretum Bulletin\, and\n*”Inside Washington Park Arboretum’s New Zealand Focal Forest” in Seattle Met. \n \nTrails in the New Zealand Focal Forest.
