SUMMARY:Bus Tour: Historic Olmsted Parks of West Seattle with Academy for Lifelong Learning Resources
DESCRIPTION:Date: Thursday\, June 4\, 2026\, from 7:45 a.m. – 6:00 p.m.\nCost: Western Washington’s Academy for Lifelong Learning Resources members: $120; Non-members: $150\nAdditional personal expenses: Lunch and any personal purchases\nRegistration deadline: Monday\, May 4\, 2026\nTour Leaders: Sue Nicol and Jennifer Ott \nDue to the tremendous response of our Seattle Olmsted Park excursion last year\, this June we continue our visit to Olmsted-designed parks on Seattle’s west side. \nWhen John Charles Olmsted first arrived in Seattle in 1903\, he was struck by the city’s “extraordinary landscape advantages.” In West Seattle he aimed to preserve\, for the public\, an old-growth forest park\, active playfields\, and ample views of Puget Sound and the Olympic Mountains. Olmsted’s original 1903 plan focused on the central and east parts of the City. After West Seattle and other neighborhoods were annexed to the City in 1907\, the Olmsteds were hired back to create a supplemental parks and boulevard plan for those neighborhoods. \nOur journey this year includes: \n\nLongfellow Creek Legacy Trail: We’ll walk the path along Longfellow Creek as it weaves through a lush ravine past a beaver colony.\nDelridge and Hiawatha Playfields: These Olmsted-designed playfields were among the first active sports fields west of the Mississippi. Both were designed between 1910 and 1912.\nSchmitz Park and Boulevard: Donated to the City by Ferdinand Schmitz to preserve its old-growth forest\, this park was intentionally left “wild” to protect one of Seattle’s last stands of old-growth forest.\nAlki Beach Park: Lunch is at a restaurant of your choice on Alki Avenue SW. The Olmsted Brothers helped secure this waterfront park\, with fabulous views of Puget Sound and the Olympic Mountains for public use.\nRose Garden and the Woodland Park Zoo: The roses should be in full bloom at the Woodland Park Rose Garden\, a 2.5-acre formal garden at the south entrance of the zoo. This rose garden opened in 1924 and is home to nearly 3\,000 roses and a sensory garden. In 1910\, the Olmsteds designed the zoo grounds. They placed small animal exhibits in what’s now the War Garden\, now outside the zoo grounds just west of the Rose Garden. This tour doesn’t enter the zoo.\nEB Dunn Gardens: This is the only PNW private residential garden designed by the Olmsted brothers that is open to the public. We end our day with a docent-led tour of this beautiful residential estate.\n\nEMAIL TO JOIN IN SEATTLE \nNote: This tour entails a series of walks\, at times on uneven ground\, totaling 1.5 miles.

SUMMARY:Walking Tour of Washington Park Arboretum with UWBG
DESCRIPTION:The city first acquired Washington Park from the Puget Mill Company in 1900. By 1904\, the city hired the Olmsted Brothers firm to prepare drawings for a roadway alignment through the park. Plans for how a “pleasure drive” would connect Lake Washington Boulevard to the university campus through Washington Park evolved quickly over the next several months. Learn how these plans came to fruition in this informative walk.

SUMMARY:University of Washington Campus Walking Tour
DESCRIPTION:Join UW Botanic Gardens and the Friends of Seattle’s Olmsted Parks on the final walking tour of Seattle’s Olmsted Brothers historic design legacy this summer! \nRelocated from downtown northward to larger\, less-developed acreage in 1895\, the University of Washington consisted of just six buildings when the Olmsted Brothers firm prepared a general campus plan in 1903. John Charles Olmsted returned in 1906 to design the grounds for the 1909 Alaska-Yukon-Pacific Exposition (AYPE)\, which attracted over three million people to Seattle (population 240\,000) that year. Olmsted incorporated the campus into the overall city park system and encouraged the university’s regents to reserve part of the campus for public park uses. Today it is an important element of the city’s open space infrastructure. \nCreating an elaborate park system was probably the furthest thought from their minds when the Denny party arrived at Alki Point on November 13\, 1851. All they could see through the rain were trees\, more trees\, and water. Building a home was far more important than building a place to play. And yet\, just 33 years later Seattle had its first park and\, 20 years after that\, the city had a comprehensive plan for major parks and parkways that would rival any found in the United States. \nRegistration is limited\, please purchase tickets through UWBG here!

SUMMARY:Volunteer Park Walking Tour
DESCRIPTION:Join UW Botanic Gardens and the Friends of Seattle’s Olmsted Parks on a walking tour of Seattle’s Olmsted Brothers parks and parkways this summer! \nVolunteer Park is often referred to as the crown jewel of Seattle’s Olmsted park and boulevard system\, as its most complete and best-preserved Olmsted-designed landscape. Land purchased in 1876 was originally used as a cemetery\, but in their 1903 report to the Seattle Board of Park Commissioners\, the Olmsted Brothers proposed extensive improvements to the earlier park design by Parks Superintendent E.O. Schwagerl. Design drawings\, developed from 1904 to 1910\, incorporated the city water system facilities and guided the development of a pastoral landscape complemented by more formal garden beds along the ridge the park. \nCreating an elaborate park system was probably the furthest thought from their minds when the Denny party arrived at Alki Point on November 13\, 1851. All they could see through the rain were trees\, more trees\, and water. Building a home was far more important than building a place to play. SUMMARY:Schmitz Preserve Park Walking Tour
DESCRIPTION:53-acre Schmitz Preserve Park was donated to the City of Seattle in pieces between 1908 and 1912. The most generous portion came from a German immigrant/banker/realtor named Ferdinand Schmitz\, who served on the park commission during those years. He and his wife Emma donated the land “to be used perpetually…for park purposes…in order that certain natural features be preserved.” This park is one of only two Seattle parks where our magnificent old-growth coniferous forest is still largely intact. \nThe Olmsted Brothers firm developed design drawings for the park in 1909. The design included a shelter house and pergola\, a trail system\, a scenic pool\, and waterfalls within the park. \nTour details: \n\nThis loop tour is approximately 1.5 miles long.\nPark trails are steep at times and can be muddy. Please wear appropriate footwear.\nVIP – meet at the Schmitz Park trailhead at the intersection of SW Admiral Way and SW Stevens Street\, 5463 SW Stevens Street. \nKing County Bus routes 50 and 56 travel on SW Admiral Way and have stops near the trailhead.\nSuggested parking is along Stevens Street.\n\nSpace is limited; advance registration is required. Link here for additional information and registration. \nPlease email tours@seattleolmsted.org if you have any questions.

SUMMARY:Washington Park Arboretum Walking Tour
DESCRIPTION:Join UW Botanic Gardens and the Friends of Seattle’s Olmsted Parks at Washington Park Arboretum for walking tours of Seattle’s Olmsted Brothers parks and parkways this summer! \nThe city first acquired Washington Park from the Puget Mill Company in 1900. By 1904\, the city hired the Olmsted Brothers firm to prepare drawings for a roadway alignment through the park. Plans for how a “pleasure drive” would connect Lake Washington Boulevard to the university campus through Washington Park evolved quickly over the next several months. \nThe Olmsted Brothers firm would not address Washington Park design again until the 1930’s\, when James Dawson was hired to provide a master plan for creating an arboretum within the park. Features of the Olmsted Brothers’ plans that are most evident today include Lake Washington Boulevard\, Azalea Way\, the Stone Cottage and Stone Overlook\, and the pond in the Japanese Garden. \nSpace for this tour is limited\, please purchase tickets from UWBG here!

SUMMARY:Pop-Up Seattle - Dunn Gardens
DESCRIPTION:Join the Olmsted Network for tour and lunch at the historic Dunn Gardens in Seattle\, WA. \nWe’ll explore the magnificent grounds together— with history and horticulture experts leading the way— before gathering for a boxed lunch and conversation. Attendees are encouraged to wear comfortable clothes and walking shoes. All are welcome to stay at the gardens until close at 4 pm PT. \nThis very special garden— just north of Seattle— was originally part of the country estate of Arthur and Jeannette Dunn. \nWhile the Olmsted Brothers firm was working on public projects in Seattle\, many wealthy Seattle business owners hired the well-known firm to design landscapes on their private estates. In 1914\, salmon cannery owner Arthur G. Dunn and his wife Jeanette purchased ten acres of land north of Seattle\, planning to create a summer home. The following year the Dunns hired the Olmsted Brothers firm to locate a cottage and develop a landscape plan to surround their future summer home. The Estate and gardens were listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1994. \nSpace is limited. Please register before the June 7 deadline. \nThis experience is part of a new and exciting travel opportunity! In 2024\, the Olmsted Network is hosting exclusive “pop-up” trips in the Olmsted-rich cities of Seattle (June 21)\, Staten Island (July 19-20) and Buffalo (Oct 30- Nov 1). \nThese short trips will allow our partners and friends the chance to meet like-minded travelers and explore Olmsted parks and places like never before— with expert guides leading the way!

SUMMARY:Jefferson Park Walking Tour
DESCRIPTION:John Charles Olmsted visited the large tract of city-owned land on Beacon Hill (now Jefferson Park) in 1903 when he toured the city to develop his city-wide system of parks and boulevards. In the 1903 report\, Olmsted recommended ways the city could develop the eastern section into ball fields\, walkways\, and pleasure drives. \nOriginally purchased by the city as a cemetery and reservoir site (fed by the water mains on the “pipeline road\,” later Beacon Avenue)\, the land parcels were acquired by the Parks Department through a series of transactions beginning in 1909. \nIn 1912\, Olmsted developed a preliminary plan that included a golf course east of Beacon Avenue\, ballfields\, a playground\, a running track\, and a shelter on the west side. Beacon Avenue also became part of the boulevard system\, connecting to Cheasty Boulevard. \nThough the Olmsted Brothers’ plan would not be implemented in its entirety\, it would inform the park’s redevelopment\, which began in 2001. \nThis free tour requires advance registration on Eventbrite\, reserve your spot today!! \nTour details:\n– This loop tour is approximately 1.5 miles long.\n– Meet at Jefferson Park Community Center\, 3801 Beacon Ave S\, Seattle\, WA 98108\, promptly at 10 a.m.\n– Bus 36 and 48 and the 1-line light rail will get you near Jefferson Park.\n– Free parking is available on the east side of the community center. \nPlease email tours@seattleolmsted.org if you have any questions.

SUMMARY:Woodland Park & Woodland Park Zoo Tour
DESCRIPTION:When the Olmsted’s arrived in 1903 to plan Seattle’s park and boulevard system\, Woodland Park was the city’s largest public park. Purchased from the widow of Guy Phinney in 1899 for $100\,000\, it was six miles outside Seattle’s city limits. \nThe Phinney estate consisted of a large house where the Woodland Park Zoo’s south parking lot is now\, a formal garden where the Rose Garden is\, an impressive stone entrance at 50th and Fremont Avenues\, a bandstand\, hotel\, and paths through the wooded hillside down to Green Lake\, where he built a bathing beach\, bathhouse\, and ballfield. \nThe Olmsted Brothers firm were hired in 1908 to create a design for Woodland Park. Consistent with his 1903 recommendations and believing that native forests are vital to urban areas\, J.C. Olmsted retained the natural woods on the eastern slopes of the Phinney estate leading down to Green Lake. \nThank you to Woodland Park Zoo management for allowing this free tour to enter the Zoo grounds. \nTour details: \n\nThis loop tour is approximately 2 miles long.\nMeet just south of the Woodland Park Lawn Bowling Club\, 6150 Whitman Ave N\, Seattle 98103 promptly at 10 a.m.\nAmple free parking is located south of the Club.\n\nSpace is limited\, please register via Eventbrite. SUMMARY:Leschi & Frink Park Tour
DESCRIPTION:Leschi and Frink Parks were privately-owned parks open to the public when John Charles Olmsted arrived in 1903 to design Seattle’s Park and Boulevard system. Olmsted referred to these steeply-sloped parks as the “Rainier Heights Landslide Section” and recommended that the entire area become part of Seattle’s park system to prevent major loss from future landslides if developed into residential neighborhoods. \nTour details: \n\nMeet at Leschi Elementary School\, 135 32nd Avenue\, Seattle 98122 promptly at 10 a.m.\nThe tour lasts approximately 2.5 hours and is approximately 2 miles in length.\nThis challenging loop walk includes a steep slope. Please wear appropriate shoes. And come prepared to walk both downhill and uphill on uneven ground and aging stone staircases. We urge you to bring hiking poles.\n\nFree registration\, please link to Eventbrite to sign up. If you have any additional questions about this tour\, please email tours@seattleolmsted.org.
