SUMMARY:Washington Park Arboretum Walking Tour
DESCRIPTION:Join UW Botanic Gardens and the Friends of Seattle’s Olmsted Parks at Washington Park Arboretum for walking tours of Seattle’s Olmsted Brothers parks and parkways this summer! \nThe city first acquired Washington Park from the Puget Mill Company in 1900. By 1904\, the city hired the Olmsted Brothers firm to prepare drawings for a roadway alignment through the park. Plans for how a “pleasure drive” would connect Lake Washington Boulevard to the university campus through Washington Park evolved quickly over the next several months. \nThe Olmsted Brothers firm would not address Washington Park design again until the 1930’s\, when James Dawson was hired to provide a master plan for creating an arboretum within the park. Features of the Olmsted Brothers’ plans that are most evident today include Lake Washington Boulevard\, Azalea Way\, the Stone Cottage and Stone Overlook\, and the pond in the Japanese Garden. \nSpace for this tour is limited\, please purchase tickets from UWBG here!

SUMMARY:Pop-Up Seattle - Dunn Gardens
DESCRIPTION:Join the Olmsted Network for tour and lunch at the historic Dunn Gardens in Seattle\, WA. \nWe’ll explore the magnificent grounds together— with history and horticulture experts leading the way— before gathering for a boxed lunch and conversation. Attendees are encouraged to wear comfortable clothes and walking shoes. All are welcome to stay at the gardens until close at 4 pm PT. \nThis very special garden— just north of Seattle— was originally part of the country estate of Arthur and Jeannette Dunn. \nWhile the Olmsted Brothers firm was working on public projects in Seattle\, many wealthy Seattle business owners hired the well-known firm to design landscapes on their private estates. In 1914\, salmon cannery owner Arthur G. Dunn and his wife Jeanette purchased ten acres of land north of Seattle\, planning to create a summer home. The following year the Dunns hired the Olmsted Brothers firm to locate a cottage and develop a landscape plan to surround their future summer home. The Estate and gardens were listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1994. \nSpace is limited. Please register before the June 7 deadline. \nThis experience is part of a new and exciting travel opportunity! In 2024\, the Olmsted Network is hosting exclusive “pop-up” trips in the Olmsted-rich cities of Seattle (June 21)\, Staten Island (July 19-20) and Buffalo (Oct 30- Nov 1). \nThese short trips will allow our partners and friends the chance to meet like-minded travelers and explore Olmsted parks and places like never before— with expert guides leading the way!

SUMMARY:Jefferson Park Walking Tour
DESCRIPTION:John Charles Olmsted visited the large tract of city-owned land on Beacon Hill (now Jefferson Park) in 1903 when he toured the city to develop his city-wide system of parks and boulevards. In the 1903 report\, Olmsted recommended ways the city could develop the eastern section into ball fields\, walkways\, and pleasure drives. \nOriginally purchased by the city as a cemetery and reservoir site (fed by the water mains on the “pipeline road\,” later Beacon Avenue)\, the land parcels were acquired by the Parks Department through a series of transactions beginning in 1909. \nIn 1912\, Olmsted developed a preliminary plan that included a golf course east of Beacon Avenue\, ballfields\, a playground\, a running track\, and a shelter on the west side. Beacon Avenue also became part of the boulevard system\, connecting to Cheasty Boulevard. \nThough the Olmsted Brothers’ plan would not be implemented in its entirety\, it would inform the park’s redevelopment\, which began in 2001. \nThis free tour requires advance registration on Eventbrite\, reserve your spot today!! \nTour details:\n– This loop tour is approximately 1.5 miles long.\n– Meet at Jefferson Park Community Center\, 3801 Beacon Ave S\, Seattle\, WA 98108\, promptly at 10 a.m.\n– Bus 36 and 48 and the 1-line light rail will get you near Jefferson Park.\n– Free parking is available on the east side of the community center. \nPlease email tours@seattleolmsted.org if you have any questions.

SUMMARY:Woodland Park & Woodland Park Zoo Tour
DESCRIPTION:When the Olmsted’s arrived in 1903 to plan Seattle’s park and boulevard system\, Woodland Park was the city’s largest public park. Purchased from the widow of Guy Phinney in 1899 for $100\,000\, it was six miles outside Seattle’s city limits. \nThe Phinney estate consisted of a large house where the Woodland Park Zoo’s south parking lot is now\, a formal garden where the Rose Garden is\, an impressive stone entrance at 50th and Fremont Avenues\, a bandstand\, hotel\, and paths through the wooded hillside down to Green Lake\, where he built a bathing beach\, bathhouse\, and ballfield. \nThe Olmsted Brothers firm were hired in 1908 to create a design for Woodland Park. Consistent with his 1903 recommendations and believing that native forests are vital to urban areas\, J.C. Olmsted retained the natural woods on the eastern slopes of the Phinney estate leading down to Green Lake. \nThank you to Woodland Park Zoo management for allowing this free tour to enter the Zoo grounds. \nTour details: \n\nThis loop tour is approximately 2 miles long.\nMeet just south of the Woodland Park Lawn Bowling Club\, 6150 Whitman Ave N\, Seattle 98103 promptly at 10 a.m.\nAmple free parking is located south of the Club.\n\nSpace is limited\, please register via Eventbrite. SUMMARY:UW Botanic Gardens: University of Washington Campus Walking Tour
DESCRIPTION:Relocated from downtown northward to larger\, less-developed acreage in 1895\, the University of Washington consisted of just six buildings when the Olmsted Brothers firm prepared a general campus plan in 1903. John Charles Olmsted returned in 1906 to design the grounds for the 1909 Alaska-Yukon-Pacific Exposition (AYPE)\, which attracted over three million people to Seattle (population 240\,000) that year. Olmsted incorporated the campus into the overall city park system and encouraged the university’s regents to reserve part of the campus for public park uses. Today it is an important element of the city’s open space infrastructure. \nCost: $30 Order tickets here. Financial aid slots available on a first-come\, first-served basis.

SUMMARY:UW Botanic Gardens: Seward Park Walking Tour
DESCRIPTION:Originally called Bailey Peninsula\, Seward Park boasts some of Seattle’s oldest-growth native forest thanks to John Charles Olmsted\, who helped save it from development by encouraging the city to include its purchase in the park and boulevard system he designed in 1903. \nBailey Peninsula was far outside the City limits when Olmsted proposed including it as part of the Comprehensive Park & Boulevard System in 1903. As a 300-acre natural reserve it would form an ideal terminus of what is now Lake Washington Boulevard. \nIn 1911 the City purchased the peninsula. Olmsted’s 1912 preliminary plan for the park locates programmed spaces\, such as a dancing pavilion\, basketball and tennis courts\, and a small boat harbor on the northern shore of the park. The majority of the park featured the old growth forest\, which visitors could explore via several meandering trails. The design is a prime example of the Olmsted Brothers’ ecological approach to park design\, with many woodland trails\, an amphitheater and a shoreline trail. \nOlmsted’s plan was never fully implemented\, but his 1912 plan influenced later development in the park\, and the forest has largely been preserved. \nCost: $30 Purchase tickets here. Financial aid slots on a first-come\, first-served basis.

SUMMARY:Delridge "Dell" Tour
DESCRIPTION:The Olmsted Brothers’ 1903 report did not include West Seattle because it was still outside Seattle’s city limits. But when the neighborhood was annexed in 1907\, Olmsted was hired back to add to his original park and boulevard plan. \nHe recommended connecting boulevards between the City’s east side and West Seattle. In addition to the boulevards that were never built\, he recommended parks along Longfellow Creek and what became Delridge Playfield. On this walk you will learn about the boulevards that were never built\, and what evidence is still to be found of the Olmsted Brothers’ recommendations for the Delridge neighborhood. \nAbout the Delridge tour: Meet at 26th Avenue SW & SW Yancy Street in the Delridge neighborhood. \nThis walk is not a loop. Distance is approximately 2.5 miles to the end point at 26th & Graham (one-way). Tour participants may walk back to the start on SW 26th Street\, or catch the H Line bus at Graham & Delridge Way and return to within a couple of blocks of the starting point. Tour participants are responsible for their own bus fare. \nThe tour should last approximately 2 1/2 hours (one-way) – please allow for extra time if you intend to walk both directions. \nThe tour is FREE and appropriate for all ages. Walks  will happen rain or shine. \nContact tours@seattleolmsted.org for more information about specific tours.

SUMMARY:Aids Memorial Pathway Tour
DESCRIPTION:The Capitol Hill Historical Society is is excited to announce this opportunity to walk Capitol Hill’s AIDS Memorial Pathway with former City Council member Tom Rasmussen. For decades\, Seattle’s LGBTQ+ history has been inextricably linked with the history of Capitol Hill. Starting in 2015\, Rasmussen was one of a passionate group of volunteers and community leaders who came together to create The AMP\, or AIDS Memorial Pathway\, which was completed in 2021 and now serves as a highlight of the neighborhood. The project has three goals: to use public art to create a physical place for reflection and remembrance\, to share stories of the epidemic and the diverse community responses to the AIDS crisis\, and to provide a call to action to end HIV/AIDS stigma and discrimination. Today\, this beautiful series of art works weaves its way through our every day neighborhood spots\, from the farmer’s market to Cal Anderson Park. Here is a chance to explore the people and history behind the art and learn how it all fits together. \nThe tour will meet at the Station House Cathy Hillenbrand Community Room\, which does not have an official address\, but is at 10th Ave E and John Street. Once gathered\, we will hear from Tom Rassmuseen and then walk the pathway to learn about the stops along the way. The tour will take place rain or shine\, so come prepared for both scenarios. The walk will be slow and fairly flat\, with some slight inclines\, but attendees should be prepared to be on their feet for roughly an hour and a half. Reservations required\, link to purchase tickets.

SUMMARY:Magnolia Boulevard Madrone Walk
DESCRIPTION:Seattle’s Olmsted Parks and Boulevards was imagined as a system of beautiful landscapes and boulevards in the late 1800s. Magnolia Boulevard is home to some of the most picturesque views foregrounded by madrone with an expansive Puget Sound backdrop. In late November\, Seattle Parks and Recreation installed a series of planting beds to protect larger madrone trees and enhancing understory plant diversity. We are planning a tree walk to highlight the Boulevard’s trees and Olmsted legacy project for April 15. Join the ARME and landscape architects from Seattle Parks and Recreation and the Berger Partnership. \nOpen to the public \nAll ages OK

SUMMARY:Friends of Seattle Olmsted Parks Walking Tour: Volunteer Park
DESCRIPTION:Volunteer Park is often referred to as the crown jewel of Seattle’s Olmsted park and boulevard system\, as its most complete and best-preserved Olmsted-designed landscape. Land purchased in 1876 was originally used as a cemetery\, but in their 1903 report to the Seattle Board of Park Commissioners\, the Olmsted Brothers proposed extensive improvements to the earlier park design by Parks Superintendent E.O. Schwagerl. Design drawings\, developed from 1904 to 1910\, incorporated the city water system facilities and guided the development of a pastoral landscape complemented by more formal garden beds along the ridge the park. \nCreating an elaborate park system was probably the furthest thought from their minds when the Denny party arrived at Alki Point on November 13\, 1851. All they could see through the rain were trees\, more trees\, and water. Building a home was far more important than building a place to play. And yet\, just 33 years later Seattle had its first park and\, 20 years after that\, the city had a comprehensive plan for major parks and parkways that would rival any found in the United States.
