SUMMARY:Magnolia Boulevard Madrone Walk
DESCRIPTION:Seattle’s Olmsted Parks and Boulevards was imagined as a system of beautiful landscapes and boulevards in the late 1800s. Magnolia Boulevard is home to some of the most picturesque views foregrounded by madrone with an expansive Puget Sound backdrop. In late November\, Seattle Parks and Recreation installed a series of planting beds to protect larger madrone trees and enhancing understory plant diversity. We are planning a tree walk to highlight the Boulevard’s trees and Olmsted legacy project for April 15. Join the ARME and landscape architects from Seattle Parks and Recreation and the Berger Partnership. \nOpen to the public \nAll ages OK

SUMMARY:Friends of Seattle Olmsted Parks Walking Tour: Volunteer Park
DESCRIPTION:Volunteer Park is often referred to as the crown jewel of Seattle’s Olmsted park and boulevard system\, as its most complete and best-preserved Olmsted-designed landscape. Land purchased in 1876 was originally used as a cemetery\, but in their 1903 report to the Seattle Board of Park Commissioners\, the Olmsted Brothers proposed extensive improvements to the earlier park design by Parks Superintendent E.O. Schwagerl. Design drawings\, developed from 1904 to 1910\, incorporated the city water system facilities and guided the development of a pastoral landscape complemented by more formal garden beds along the ridge the park. \nCreating an elaborate park system was probably the furthest thought from their minds when the Denny party arrived at Alki Point on November 13\, 1851. All they could see through the rain were trees\, more trees\, and water. Building a home was far more important than building a place to play. And yet\, just 33 years later Seattle had its first park and\, 20 years after that\, the city had a comprehensive plan for major parks and parkways that would rival any found in the United States.

SUMMARY:Support Seattle’s Olmsted Parks & Boulevards with your GiveBig Donation
DESCRIPTION:The Friends of Seattle’s Olmsted Parks (FSOP) is dedicated to preserving Seattle’s unique Olmsted landscape heritage that provides vital open space for everyone. The public’s need for these parks and boulevards this past year illustrates the need for all of us to support Seattle’s open spaces. \nYour 2021 donation through the GiveBig Campaign will help us in our ongoing efforts to educate and advocate for over 80 Olmsted legacy parks and boulevards throughout Seattle. \n\nDonate Now\n\nThis year\, donations to FSOP will be matched up to a total of $3000. \nFor example\, this past year we assisted Seattle Parks Dept. in its work to maintain and restore Cal Anderson Park’s landscapes; we promoted Be’er Sheva Park’s campaign to build a welcoming beach in the Rainier Beach neighborhood; and we provided input on tree replacement along Queen Anne Boulevard. Additional efforts were made to engage youth in parks through a partnership with Coyote Central. \nIn 2021 we will continue these efforts as we plan for the national celebration of the 200th anniversary of the birth of Frederick Law Olmsted. He is considered the father of American landscape architecture and is the inspiration for the Olmsted Brothers’ design of Seattle’s system of parks and boulevards. \n\nDonate Now\nWe appreciate your support!

SUMMARY:Call for Submissions - Earth Day
DESCRIPTION:Celebrating the 50th Anniversary of Earth Day and Appreciation of Seattle’s Parks\n  \nDo you have a favorite photo\, memory\, or personal artwork that involves one of our Olmsted parks or boulevards\, or any of our city parks? In these days of self-containment\, do you find yourself growing introspective about Seattle’s striking surroundings or its colorful history? We’d love to see and hear from you! \nWith the global outbreak of COVID-19\, Friends of Seattle’s Olmsted Parks is revisiting some of its springtime plans\, including events to honor Earth Day 50 years after its founding. So\, to mark this Anniversary\, Friends of Seattle’s Olmsted Parks would like to collect and share images and mementos that celebrate Seattle’s great outdoors. \nLawton Park (photo credit: Gretchen van Etten- Semke)\n  \nIn this time of having to reinvent how we conduct our daily lives\, FSOP also remembers how our larger city environment has been reshaped and its landscapes re-purposed over many decades. Our older Olmsted parks both directed and responded to Seattle’s early development\, as have more recently acquired park properties. In normal times\, these outdoor spaces provide opportunities for group recreation and outdoor events\, socializing\, immersion into native woodland settings\, distant mountain views\, and scenic panoramas.  While we cannot currently partake in all these activities\, we can express gratitude and appreciation for how they are made possible. We encourage everyone to share ways that Seattle’s parks are meaningful to them\, in whatever medium or form is digitally suitable. \nFrink Park (Seattle Municipal Archives #178408)\n  \nWe also feel this will be a great way to connect and share happy memories with each other\, particularly during this time of extraordinary containment and isolation due to coronavirus. \n  \n \n  \nWe will assemble entries into a slide show\, which will be posted on our website and Facebook page on April 22. \nSo\, if you have a photo\, sketch\, poem\, musing\, written piece or memory you’d like to share\, please send it to fsopjen@gmail.com or to friends@seattleolmsted.org. And keep your eyes peeled for the final display! \nDeadline for submissions is Saturday\, April 18. Digital submissions only\, please. \nSteps to Mt. SUMMARY:Olmsted in Seattle Book Talk at CUH
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a talk by historian Jennifer Ott about stories she uncovered in her research for Olmsted in Seattle. \nIn the midst of galloping growth at the turn of the 20th century\, Seattle’s city leaders seized on the confluence of a roaring economy with the City Beautiful movement to hire the Olmsted Brothers landscape architecture firm to design a park and parkway system. Their 1903 plan led to a supplemental plan\, a playground plan\, numerous park and boulevard designs\, changes to park system management\, and a ripple effect\, as the Olmsted Brothers were hired to design public and private landscapes throughout the region. The park system shaped Seattle’s character and continues to play a key role in the city’s livability today. \n  \nDue to the November 16 book launch date\, books may not be available for purchase at this event. \n  \nThe event is free\, with a suggested $5 donation to support UW Botanic Gardens public education programs.

SUMMARY:May 18th Walking Tour -- SW Queen Anne Hill
DESCRIPTION:Join Us on May 18th for our Walking Tour in Kinnear Park and SW Queen Anne Hill \nYou may want to wear your “fitbit” for this one! We will be taking a few sets of stairs along our route through this neighborhood. \nJohn Charles Olmsted had little influence on Kinnear Park itself — it was already a developed park when he arrived in Seattle in 1903 — but the park helped define Olmsted’s vision for a park and boulevard system extending throughout Seattle\, including Queen Anne Hill. We will learn more about that vision and Olmsted’s plans for southwest Queen Anne as we wind through the neighborhood\, also taking in Marshall Park\, Betty Bowen’s house\, Willcox Wall\, a portion of Queen Anne Boulevard\, and the impressive residential estate of C.H. Black\, the grounds of which were designed by the Olmsted Brothers firm. \nPlease note the early start time. You may contact friends@seattleolmsted.org for more information about this tour. \nMay 18th\nKinnear Park and SW Queen Anne Hill\n9:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. \nMeet at the stairway entrance to Kinnear Park at 7th Ave and W Olympic Place. \nBetty Bowen Viewpoint at Marshall Park
