SUMMARY:May 18th Walking Tour -- SW Queen Anne Hill
DESCRIPTION:Join Us on May 18th for our Walking Tour in Kinnear Park and SW Queen Anne Hill \nYou may want to wear your “fitbit” for this one! We will be taking a few sets of stairs along our route through this neighborhood. \nJohn Charles Olmsted had little influence on Kinnear Park itself — it was already a developed park when he arrived in Seattle in 1903 — but the park helped define Olmsted’s vision for a park and boulevard system extending throughout Seattle\, including Queen Anne Hill. We will learn more about that vision and Olmsted’s plans for southwest Queen Anne as we wind through the neighborhood\, also taking in Marshall Park\, Betty Bowen’s house\, Willcox Wall\, a portion of Queen Anne Boulevard\, and the impressive residential estate of C.H. Black\, the grounds of which were designed by the Olmsted Brothers firm. \nPlease note the early start time. You may contact friends@seattleolmsted.org for more information about this tour. \nMay 18th\nKinnear Park and SW Queen Anne Hill\n9:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. \nMeet at the stairway entrance to Kinnear Park at 7th Ave and W Olympic Place. \nBetty Bowen Viewpoint at Marshall Park

SUMMARY:Volunteer Park Fall Restoration Day - September 17
DESCRIPTION:Save the date for the Volunteer Park Trust’s 6th annual fall clean up event on September 17\, 2017\, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. This major restoration effort brings scores of friends and neighbors together to make a huge impact on Volunteer Park. In past years volunteers have prepared beds for replanting (according to the original Olmsted plans)\, laid new gravel on paths\, cleared out invasive weeds\, and planted shrubs. Their efforts supplement the park staffs’ work caring for the park and help restore the Olmsted vision for Volunteer Park. \nThe Trust will provide tools\, gloves\, and free coffee and donuts! Come help make Volunteer Park more beautiful for everyone. \nRead about last year’s Fall Restoration Day in the Capitol Hill Times here. The normal Lake Washington Boulevard closures will be in effect\, and the extended route will travel along the relatively quiet Olmsted Parkways of Mount Baker Boulevard\, and Cheasty Boulevard.Transforming a 20th Century Intersection\nInto a 21st Century Model Community\nMt Baker Hub Fest / Seattle Design Fest Program – September 19 at 6:30 pm \nOn Monday September 19th at 6:30 pm\, the community is invited to attend a free Design Fest Program Event entitled\, “Mount Baker Hub — Transforming a 20th Century Intersection Into A 21st Century Model Community”. This event takes place at the Art Space Mount Baker Lofts\, in the community room (2915 Rainier Avenue South – facing the Mt Baker Link station). The Program includes a set of Town Hall-style “Lightning Talks”\, with presentations from Friends of Seattle Olmsted Parks\, International Living Future Institute\, Miller Hull\, Schemata Workshop\, Seattle Neighborhood Greenways\, Seattle Public Utilities\, and Sound Transit. These presentations will explore how the North Rainier Valley and its Mt Baker “Hub” can become a truly sustainable community. This event will also provide an opportunity for community members to learn more about the area’s registration for the Living Community Challenge. \nJennifer Ott\, FSOP’s vice president\, will talk about how the Olmsted Brothers plans for Seattle’s parks\, boulevards and playground encompassed the entire city and provided city leaders with a plan for ensuring every neighborhood had access to park space. The plan is inspired by Seattle’s varied landscape and spectacular views and ensures that even as the city grow\, everyone can enjoy the parks\, forests\, shorelands\, and vistas within the city. In Mount Baker Town Center\, there is the opportunity to reconnect the lakeshore\, with its mountain and lake views\, with the forests along Cheasty Boulevard and the amazing city views and recreational opportunities at Jefferson Park. There are not many cities that can boast such an array of natural amenities in such close proximity and we want to further Olmsted’s vision of connectivity and access for all as development continues. \nFOR MORE INFORMATION ON HUB FEST CONTACT:Maia@pennilessprojects.com or Towncenterfriends@gmail.org

All are welcome to listen\, learn\, ask\, and let our council candidates see how important green spaces are to us. \nFor answers Seattle City Council candidates provided on TreePAC’s candidate questionnaire\, visit http://treepac.org/2015-city-council-candidate-questionnaire/2015-questionnaire-responses/. \nFor more information please contact Cass Turnbull at 206-783-9093 or cassturnbull@comcast.net. \nBridge across stream in Schmitz Preserve Park\, 1910. SUMMARY:Olmsted Documentary Airs June 28th on KCTS
DESCRIPTION:The new documentary Frederick Law Olmsted: Designing America tells the story of Olmsted’s life and how his work\, and that of his sons\, has helped shape American cities and our ideas about the environment. It will be aired on KCTS (channel 9) on Saturday\, June 28th\, at 7:00 p.m. \nFrederick Law Olmsted\, known as the father of American landscape architecture\, was co-designer of Central Park\, head of the first Yosemite commission\, leader of the campaign to protect Niagara Falls\, designer of the U.S. Capitol Grounds\, site planner for the Great White City of the 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition\, planner of Boston’s “Emerald Necklace” of green space and of park systems in many other cities. Olmsted’s pioneering design of the public parks and parkway systems in Buffalo\, New York\, is the oldest coordinated system in America and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. To Olmsted\, a park was both a work of art and a necessity for urban life. His efforts to preserve nature created an “environmental ethic” decades before the environmental movement became a force in American politics. \nThe PBS website has a number of short essays about Olmsted and the Olmsted firms’ work across the United States. One page talks about the Olmsted Brothers firm’s work in the Pacific Northwest. \nThe website also has resources for educators\, including classroom activities and a video created for classroom use.
