SUMMARY:Olmsted Documentary Airs June 28th on KCTS
DESCRIPTION:The new documentary Frederick Law Olmsted: Designing America tells the story of Olmsted’s life and how his work\, and that of his sons\, has helped shape American cities and our ideas about the environment. It will be aired on KCTS (channel 9) on Saturday\, June 28th\, at 7:00 p.m. \nFrederick Law Olmsted\, known as the father of American landscape architecture\, was co-designer of Central Park\, head of the first Yosemite commission\, leader of the campaign to protect Niagara Falls\, designer of the U.S. Capitol Grounds\, site planner for the Great White City of the 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition\, planner of Boston’s “Emerald Necklace” of green space and of park systems in many other cities. Olmsted’s pioneering design of the public parks and parkway systems in Buffalo\, New York\, is the oldest coordinated system in America and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. To Olmsted\, a park was both a work of art and a necessity for urban life. His efforts to preserve nature created an “environmental ethic” decades before the environmental movement became a force in American politics. \nThe PBS website has a number of short essays about Olmsted and the Olmsted firms’ work across the United States. One page talks about the Olmsted Brothers firm’s work in the Pacific Northwest. \nThe website also has resources for educators\, including classroom activities and a video created for classroom use.

SUMMARY:Kinnear Park Ribbon Cutting
DESCRIPTION:Although Kinnear Park was established before John Charles Olmsted developed the park and boulevard system for Seattle\, he included it in that plan because it exemplified one type of park he wanted the city to develop – open space along bluffs that featured stunning water and mountain views and forested hillsides. \nHe wrote in his 1903 report: “The park is pleasing in detail and extremely valuable\, owing to the fine views which it commands over the Sound. It is a good sample of the miles of similar bluff parks which it is hoped the city will eventually have. Such parks will always be a great benefit to adjoining residential property\, and will occupy land which it is rather desirable than otherwise to prevent being utilized by houses\, since it is too steep or too subject to landslides to be suitable for such purposes.” By taking advantage of two of Seattle’s features – steep hills and distant views\, Kinnear Park made potential disadvantages into valuable city assets. \nFor the past several years volunteers from FOLKpark (Friends of Lower Kinnear Park) have worked to restore the lower\, wooded portion of Kinnear Park. According to the Parks Department\, “FOLKpark helped raise nearly $1 million for improvements including widened pathways\, removal of many invasive plants and expanded views into the interior of the park. HBB Landscape Architecture designed the park renewal. Funding came from the Parks and Green Spaces Levy Opportunity Fund\, Department of Neighborhood Matching Fund\, contributions from individual and business supporters and a variety of fundraising efforts.” \nThis Saturday\, from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m.\, there will be activities in the park to celebrate the improvements. FOLKpark will give guided tours and there will be information tables set up by local organizations\, including FSOP. Please stop by to visit us! \nKinnear Park\, 1908. DESCRIPTION:Frederick Law Olmsted Jr.\, John Charles Olmsted’s brother and business partner\, did a large part of the firm’s work in California. His work there influenced the firm’s work in Washington state and this National Association for Olmsted Parks symposium is an excellent opportunity to learn more about Olmsted design principles and how they were realized in a number of landscapes and how the Olmsted Brothers’ work shaped public attitudes toward land use and conservation. \nThe symposium\, Frederick Law Olmsted Jr.: A Vision for the American West\, will be held at Stanford University March 27-28\, 2014. For more information about the symposium agenda and registration\, go to the NAOP web page. \n \nPhotos courtesy National Association for Olmsted Parks

SUMMARY:Walking Tour of New Zealand Focal Forest in Washington Park Arboretum
DESCRIPTION:Join FSOP as we tour the newly opened New Zealand Focal Forest in the Washington Park Arboretum on September 28th\, at 10 a.m. We will meet at the Japanese Garden parking lot and the tour will last about 2 hours. Andy Mitton\, FSOP board member and The Berger Partnership’s landscape architect for the project\, will lead the tour. They will talk about the forest’s design and its relationship to the other forests in the Pacific Connections Garden. We’ll also talk about the Olmsted Brothers legacy in Washington Park and the Arboretum. \nAccording to Seattle Parks and Recreation\, the New Zealand Forest is the first of five eco-geographic forests to be fully completed in the Arboretum’s Pacific Connections Garden\, which will someday cover 14 acres in Washington Park and include forests from Cascadia\, Chile\, Australia\, and China\, in addition to the New Zealand forest. Within the New Zealand Forest\, there are seven vegetation zones: two southern beech (Nothofagus) forests\, three shrublands\, and two alpine grasslands. These vegetation zones are found in mid- to high-elevation zones on the South Island of New Zealand. \nThe Washington Park Arboretum was designed in 1936 by James Frederick Dawson\, a senior partner in the Olmsted Brothers firm. Dawson had worked extensively in Seattle\, including playing a major role in implementing John Charles Olmsted’s landscape plan for the Alaska-Yukon Pacific Exposition held on the University of Washington campus in 1909. The Seattle Garden Club brought Dawson to Seattle in 1935 to prepare plans that Works Progress Administration workers could use to develop the Arboretum. \nFor more information about the New Zealand Forest see: \n*The Seattle Parks and Recreation website\,\n*“Planting the New Zealand Forest\,” in the summer 2013 issue of the Washington Park Arboretum Bulletin\, and\n*”Inside Washington Park Arboretum’s New Zealand Focal Forest” in Seattle Met. \n \nTrails in the New Zealand Focal Forest. SUMMARY:FSOP Annual Meeting - September 28th
DESCRIPTION:Each September\, FSOP holds our annual meeting in an Olmsted park following a walking tour. This year we are going to have a potluck lunch at noon on September 28th\, in the overlook shelter that has recently been restored as part of the Pacific Connections garden project. The meeting will follow the morning tour\, starting at 10:00 a.m.\, of the newly installed New Zealand Focal Forest. At noon we will gather at the overlook shelter (Google map) for lunch and a short business meeting. \nOne item of business will be the election of our new board members. We are excited to welcome Ann Hunt and Penny Kriese to our board. Ann is the horticulturist at Chateau Ste Michelle winery in Woodinville. She has been involved in the winery’s Archive Committee to preserve and present the history of both the winery and the estate on which the winery exists\, and the Grounds Committee to oversee the future of the historic property. She oversees the maintenance of the grounds and has written brochures about the estate grounds and plants and created a walking tour for the grounds. In her work she combines sustainable and green practices with preservation of the historic legacy. She is looking forward to helping us protect and augment Seattle’s Olmsted legacy. \nPenny moved to the Seattle area in the summer of 2010 from northern Virginia where served for six years as a Tree Steward for Alexandria-Arlington\, a public outreach and tree educational program\, and was employed as a project manager and website editor at the Department of Labor. Penny and completed a graduate certification program in Landscape Design at George Washington University. Once in Seattle\, Penny joined the King County Master Gardeners and currently serves on the Master Gardener Foundation Board as the Communications Committee Chair and as a member of the Finance Committee. She became a Seattle Tree Ambassadors for Green Lake – Wallingford in 2011 to educate residents about the urban canopy with neighborhood outreach and educational activities. As a Tree Ambassador she developed an interactive walking map of Green Lake trees in 2012. She has helped produce additional tree walks for Seattle Center\, Eastlake\, Northeast Seattle\, and a children’s tree walk for the Woodland Park Zoo\, and leads tree walks for the Tree Ambassador program. She is interested in developing new walking tours for FSOP. \nPlease bring a lunch item to share and\, if possible\, a chair (seating is limited at the outlook shelter). \nThe annual meeting will be held at the shelter labeled “Lookout Gazebo” on this map.
